Facilities Management Toolbox

Orientation Guide

The Facilities Management Toolbox is a series of online tools that will help you learn about facility management.

There are six projects that cover eight units of competency. The units are electives from the Sports Industry Training Package SRS03.

To complete the projects you will take on the role of manager of FitWorks, a fictitious sport and recreation facility which has two outdoor pools, three indoor pools, a gymnasium, a program room, a crèche and a café. FitWorks is a Council-owned facility in the regional city of Wirilda. The FitWorks manager reports to the Council's Director of Economic Services.

Situation-based learning

Each project has a series of tasks for you to complete. Each task is broadly based on an element of competency. Sometimes a task relates to more than one element or more than one unit of competency.

The tasks are typical of those undertaken by the manager of a sport and recreation facility.

Getting started

Before you begin your first project, you should familiarise yourself with FitWorks through the FitWorks website. This can be accessed by clicking on the FitWorks logo. Browse through the website to find out information about FitWorks and its operations.

The Staff only section of the website is the FitWorks intranet site. It is here that you will find the documents, policies and procedures you will need to complete your projects, including:

  • Organisation chart, which gives you an overview of the structure of FitWorks
  • Policies and procedures, where you will find the procedures manual and policy documents
  • Forms and documents, which contains templates for all the forms and documents used in the project
  • Current projects, where you will find samples of work and completed documents
  • OH&S, which provides useful links to OH&S information.

The Contact us page is where your RTO will install the communications tools.

Working through a project

When you begin a project you will be presented with a project brief. This explains what the project is about, its purpose and aims. All the tasks you need to undertake to complete the project are listed on the left-hand side of the screen.

When an audio clip is included in the project, a link is provided to a written transcript so you can read the text.

When you complete each task you will find a checklist that you can use as a guide for completing your work. There is a link to this checklist on the task page. It can also be accessed through the Personal Training Manual. Your completed checklists should be printed and placed in your folio as they may be used as part of your assessment.

Personal training manual

The personal training manual may contain the following:

  • Checklists: a checklist for each task
  • Essential reading: fundamental information on specific topics
  • Success stories: case studies and scenarios that tell how things were done in different areas or industries
  • Handy hints: hints for completing aspects of the task
  • References and websites
  • Check your knowledge: questions to help you check your knowledge: small interactive quizzes you can use as self-tests to see if you have understood the concepts.

Use the checklist to guide you through the use of the personal training manual for each task.

Assessment

Every project has a separate assessment task. These should be completed and handed in to your trainer along with all other documents, reports and exercises you complete as you work through the tasks.

Using the communication tools

The communication tools will be installed by your training provider. These may include email, message boards and chat facilities and will be available through the Contact us page of the FitWorks website.
