VotingOnce debate has finished on a motion, the Chair puts the motion to the vote. Once the vote has been taken, the Chair announces the result by declaring the motion 'carried' or 'lost'. If the result is equal, there is not a majority in favour of the motion, so it is said to have been lost. However, some meetings allow the Chair to have a casting vote. It is the right of the Chair to abstain from casting this vote, unless the rules of the meeting require the Chair to do so. When the Chair does cast a vote, it is usually to preserve the status quo.
Make a list of the procedural motions used. Do you think that meeting procedures are necessary for the conduct of business in a meeting? Why/why not? Submit your response to the ValleyView Meeting room under the topic, Are procedures necessary? and ask for comments to be posted back. Make sure you respond to at least one other posting. |
