Heading Title 1

Responding to an environmental emergency

Large plants like FPT Foods usually have an environmental emergency response team. Phil knows that this team should be contacted immediately if there is an environmental emergency.

The milk spill was an environmental emergency, but the milk did not also present a health and safety risk to Phil and the others who took immediate action to put the sandbags in place.

In the case of a spill of a hazardous substance, only the emergency response team, who have proper training and equipment, would be able to deal with the situation.

Phil’s first responsibility in such a situation would be to protect himself, his co-workers and any other people in the immediate vicinity.

Instructions

Think about your workplace and the chemicals used there for cleaning. These may include acids and strong detergents, or solvents that can only be handled by trained professionals using appropriate procedures, safety mechanisms and PPE.

What would you do if you saw an out-of-control forklift pierce a drum of a hazardous chemical and the contents started to leak into a nearby stormwater drain?

Outline an action plan and submit it to your trainer for feedback.
