Disability support

The Disability Liaison Officer is the first point of contact for specialist information on disability support services and facilities for all South West TAFE students.

Support services are available for students who have

  • Physical disability
  • Mental illness
  • Learning disability
  • Intellectual disability
  • Vision impairment
  • Chronic illness or medical condition
  • Speech / communication impairment
  • Hearing impairment / deafness

Disclosure of Disability

There is no legal obligation for a student to disclose their disability unless it is likely to affect their performance to meet the requirements of the course. As defined by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) once disclosure has been made, appropriate responses including education adjustments to support the person with a disability must be considered.
A student may disclose:

  • Prior to enrolling
  • At enrolment
  • At commencement of study
  • At the time a disability occurs during study

Support services that may be offered include assistance with:

  • Entry to courses and enrolment
  • Physical access and orientation to the Institute
  • Support strategies and assistance. For example, note takers, interpreters, alternative assessment arrangements and the provision of information, resources, and specialist equipment

The Disability Liaison Officer is based at the Warrnambool campus and services Hamilton, Portland and Glenormiston campuses.
