Student Services

We support students with a range of specialist services. Most services are Warrnambool campus based, with outreach services to other campuses:

 

Apprenticeship Field Officer
Consults and liaises with apprentices and employers. Contact Locky Eccles on (03) 5561 3654.

 

BookshopBookshop
The bookshop supplies modules, some text books, disks, some stationery and other course related items for sale to students. In Warrnambool the bookshop is located in the Library. At Hamilton, Glenormiston, Portland and Sherwood Park the bookshop operates through Reception. Films, USB keys, CDs and DVDs are also available.

Childcare
The Institute is committed to the provision of safe and affordable child care for those students who have child care needs. The Institute is a partner with the Warrnambool City Council in the Florence Collins Children's Services complex. Assistance regarding access to child care can be sought from Student Services. Financial assistance is available for low-income students.

Computer Services by ICT Services
ICTS is a non-teaching department that provides a wide range of computer-related support services to all campuses. It looks after all PCs in computer classrooms and in the three libraries.

Information and Communication Technology Services is based at the Warrnambool campus in A building and is open weekdays from 8am to 5pm.

Course Advisor
Current and prospective students are welcome to access information regarding courses offered at South West TAFE, other TAFE institutes, and tertiary institutions across Australia. The Course Advisor will assist you with:

  • applying for courses
  • cost 
  • Austudy/Youth Allowance
  • VTAC assistance
  • enrolment support
  • accommodation assistance.

Counsellor
If you are having problems inside or outside the Institute the counsellor can help you. Assistance is provided in the following areas:

  • personal counselling
  • accommodation assistance
  • Austudy/Youth Allowance
  • enrolment support
  • childcare advice
  • student rights and responsibilities
  • sexual harassment and equal opportunity.

Disability Coordinator
The Disability Coordinator is the first point of contact for specialist information on disability support services and facilities for all South West TAFE students.

Support services are available for any student with a sensory, physical, intellectual, neurological/ learning, or psychiatric disability, whether temporary or permanent. Services are also available for students with medical conditions or students who are deaf.

A wide range of support services is available, including assistance with:

  • entry to courses and enrolment
  • physical access and orientation to the Institute
  • support strategies and assistance. For example, note takers, interpreters, alternative assessment arrangements, and the provision of information, resources, aids and special equipment.

International Education
South West TAFE offers programs to overseas students in a range of study areas, including:

  • Rural and Horticulture.

Services include free airport pick up, assistance with accommodation, counselling and career advice, orientation and ongoing cultural and social activities.

Koorie Programs Unit
The Koorie Unit, on the south side of the Library at Warrnambool campus, provides a study area and meeting room for Koorie students and community members. The Koorie Coordinator provides assistance with:

  • choosing courses and careers
  • developing specific education and training programs
  • counselling and support for current and prospective students
  • Austudy/Abstudy applications and problems.

The LibraryLibrary
The Library provides access to information resources for staff, students and the community across all campuses. Resources may be online (virtual reference collections, full text databases, electronic journals, etc) or physical (books, magazines, audiovisual, equipment or tools for loan). Flexible arrangements can be made for remote delivery students and the Library has cooperative arrangements with many other libraries. Advice from qualified and experienced information professionals is always available.

The Library building at Warrnambool has computers for student use, scanning equipment, discounted photocopying and printing facilities. Hamilton and Portland campuses have smaller facilities with online access to the main collection. Contact the Library on (03) 5564 8956 or visit the Library site.

Youth Pathways Program (YPP)
Students aged between 15-19 or students who are eligible for Youth Allowance Training entitlement, are welcome to contact the MIPS Officer regarding support required to begin and continue their TAFE study. The MIPS Officer will assist by:

  • providing you with an individual training plan that is designed to meet your specific needs.
  • providing coaching, mentoring and ongoing support to make sure that you get the most out of our TAFE experience
  • liaising with the Institute's teaching staff to facilitate our pathway to training and future employment.

Student AssociationClick to enter SWTAFE Student Association site
The South West TAFE Student Association exists to provide information, services, facilities and programs to students to maintain and improve students' rights and to act as the official voice of the student body. The Student Representative Council operates from an office in the cafe at Warrnambool with student committees at other campuses. The Study Skills Centre
The Study Skills Centre will help you convert your academic challenges into opportunities. It provides advice on:

  • organising your time
  • literacy and numeracy problems
  • note taking/proof reading
  • reading and using study time effectively
  • essay/assignment writing
  • basic computer skills
  • individual appointments available.
