What happens if I miss classes?

Students are expected to attend all classes and in some areas minimum attendance levels are set. Your teachers will let you know if this is the case. Youth Allowance will reduce or stop payments if a student accumulates more than five days of unapproved absence in a term, so it pays to be diligent with your timetable.

Can I get recognition for prior learning?

Accelerated assessment recognises what you have already learned from life experience, work experience or from any training provided at work. If what you have learned is relevant to your course you may not have to cover those learning outcomes again.

If interested, ask for an accelerated assessment application package at the front office or from your teaching department. For recognition of any prior study completed through formal courses see the exemptions section.

What if I'm not happy with my grades?

Students may appeal against final assessment. The key is to act as soon as any inconsistencies become apparent. Contact Student Records within five working days of receipt of your results statement on 5564 8983.

When are exams held?

Exams are not held for all subjects. Check with your class teachers as to whether exams will be held in your subjects.

Can I get exemptions?

An exemption occurs when the Institute Curriculum Committee waives the need for a student to complete the usual class requirements and assessment for a subject. An exemption will normally be granted on the basis that a student has already passed a program of study/training regarded by the Committee as equivalent to the standard in the subject the student is applying for exemption in. There is no cost involved in exemptions. Credit may also be given for skills you have acquired in ways other than through courses. For information on this see the Accelerated Assessment section.  See also Student Forms & Documents
