Boolean operators
Boolean operators are also known as logical operators. They allow
you to tailor your search to target very specific items or subjects.
There are three operators you can use: "and", "or"
and "not".
- "And" searches for items containing two or both search
words. For example, the search "poverty and
crime" will
search for items including both "poverty" and
"crime".
- "Or" searches for items containing either or both search
words. For example, the search "college or
university"
searches for items that contain either the words "college"
or "university", as well as items that contain both words "college" and
"university".
- "Not" searches exclude records that contain a
certain word or phrase. For example, the search "cats not
dogs" searches for items containing the word "cats" but
if the word "dogs" appears in the record, that item will
not be selected.
Type your search phrase with the Boolean operator in the Search window, then click the appropriate search button
(Author, Title, Subject, All Fields).
