Trademark

The Macquarie Dictionary defines a trademark as a name, symbol, figure, letter, word or mark that is used by a manufacturer or merchant to designate the goods he or she manufactures or sells, and to distinguish them from those manufactured or sold by others.

A trademark is different to the registration of a business name. Trademark registrations last for ten years and can be renewed indefinitely. Registration gives the trademark owner exclusive use (in Australia) of the mark as a brand name for the items or services registered.
