Course Description
This course is more commonly known as Coxswain.
This course provides training to equip participants with sufficient skills and knowledge to take charge of a commercial vessel of less than 12 metres in length, operating within the limits of sheltered and inshore waters within 15 nautical miles of the coast and up to 250 KW propulsion power.

Career Opportunities
Graduates may pursue a career as a coxswains onboard commercial vessels in Australian waters. The next career step for a person with this qualification is to become a master class 5/skipper 3 or a marine engine driver grade 3.

This course is delivered full-time over four weeks.

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.

Eligibilty and Exemptions to Receive a Government Subsidised Place
To receive a government subsidised place, students who enrol in Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses are subject to meeting eligibility criteria such as age and prior educational history. If applicants do not meet the eligibility criteria then they may still apply for the course, but they will not be entitled to a government subsidised place and will be charged a commercial fee. There will be some exceptional circumstances where applicants will be exempt from meeting the eligibility criteria. Please contact the Customer Service Centre on (03) 5564 8911 for more information with regards to eligibility.

Credits/Exemptions
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the individual’s non-accredited training and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning or competency outcomes. RPL is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Current Competence (RCC).
You can undertake a recognition assessment for individual units in most courses offered through South West TAFE. The process requires you to be able to provide evidence of competence.
