Course Description
The rapidly-expanding Spatial information, GIS and Remote Sensing sector deliver improved planning and decision-making into diverse fields including market research, land/town planning, business, agriculture, sustainability, conservation and land management and emergency services to name a few. It involves the use of digital and hard-copy data, software and operator skill to map and analyse spatial trends. It will assist in increasing sustainability options through multi- faceted planning approaches and resource-management options.

Course Length
Delivered either flexibly using the TAFEVC3 learning platform or studied internally including industry-related fieldwork. It can be completed in an 18 month time-frame. Flexible delivery options vary.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or be of mature age, however all applicants will be judged on their own merits. It is suggested applicants have at least Year 10 passes in Maths and English and an interest in Geography with adequate computing skills.
Eligibilty and Exemptions to Receive a Government Subsidised Place
To receive a government subsidised place, students who enrol in Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses are subject to meeting eligibility criteria such as age and prior educational history. If applicants do not meet the eligibility criteria then they may still apply for the course, but they will not be entitled to a government subsidised place and will be charged a commercial fee. There will be some exceptional circumstances where applicants will be exempt from meeting the eligibility criteria. Please contact the Customer Service Centre on (03) 5564 8911 for more information with regards to eligibility.
Course Costs
Please refer to the student handbook available at the Customer Service Centre of each campus or via the website. If the unit requires it, students will be expected to purchase a student copy of ArcGIS9.3 from ESRI Australia (12 month = approx. $300, your lecturer will assist with this).

Alternatively you can download the form using the Application button at the top of this brochure. Contact the Course Coordinator for the closing date for this course. Any applications received after this date will be classified as late applications and will only be considered if vacancies still exist or become available at a later date.

Credits/Exemptions
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the individual’s non-accredited training and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning or competency outcomes. RPL is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Current Competence (RCC). You can undertake a recognition assessment for individual units in most courses offered through South West TAFE. The process requires you to be able to provide evidence of competence.
