Studying via flexible delivery requires students to be employed within a workplace that supports their training. Documentation will be required from the workplace supervisor for assessment purposes.
Course Description
This course is designed for students seeking employment in the horse industry. It is also relevant to mature age students who wish to increase their horse knowledge but who may not necessarily wish to work directly in the industry. Covering a range of practical horse handling and husbandry skills as well as chemical user certification and Senior First Aid which may be required for positions such as a stud worker, stable groom or strapper, worker on a racecourse, general horse facility, or horse transport. This course provides a pathway for further study options such as the Advanced Diploma of Horse Management also offered full time or by flexible delivery through our Glenormiston campus.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can pursue many types of careers in the horse industry. These include stable foreman, supervisor of an equestrian centre, foreperson of a section on a stud as well as administrative roles in industry offices and positions such as a stud worker, stable groom or strapper, worker on a racecourse, general horse facility, or horse transport. T his course provides a pathway for further study options such as the Advanced Diploma of Horse Management, also offered by full time or flexible delivery through Glenormiston College.
Course Length
This course is delivered part time by flexible delivery. There are 10 core units and 3 electives (choice of 6). This course will take 2 years minimum to complete.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed an approved Year 11 course of study or its equivalent, or be mature age. Applicants need not have horse skills, but some skills and experience in the horse industry is desirable.

Credits/Exemptions
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the individual’s non-accredited training and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning or competency outcomes. RPL is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Current Competence (RCC). You can undertake a recognition assessment for individual units in most courses offered through South West TAFE. The process requires you to be able to provide evidence of competence.
