Course Description
This course prepares students for direct care work with people who have disabilities. This nationally accredited course consists of 14 competencies that place emphasis on integration into the community for people with disabilities.
Career Opportunities
Graduates may pursue careers as a direct care worker, residential care worker, social educator, day support worker, disability support officer, behavioural support officer and others.
Course Commencement
February 2010
Course Length
This course is delivered on-line over a period of 12 months. There will be one class per week online. All online classes will be conducted of an evening and are one hour duration. Students will be required to complete workbooks that have been designed for use in off-campus studies. Students will have access to their teacher, online, for one hour per week outside of class time.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be over 21 years of age. However, it is desirable for students to have literacy and numeracy skills at approximately year 12 level. Students will need to have intermediate computer, internet and email skills. Applicants will be interviewed to determine their aptitude to the area of study and entry level.
Work Placement
This course requires students to undertake six weeks placement in an agency that provides services to people with disabilities. Students may organise their own placement, alternatively South West TAFE can organise placement for you. Placement may be able to be undertaken at your workplace.

Credits/Exemptions
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the individual’s non-accredited training and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning or competency outcomes. RPL is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Current Competence (RCC).

You can undertake a recognition assessment for individual units in most courses offered through South West TAFE. The process requires you to be able to provide evidence of competence.
