Course Description
This dual qualification provides the skills and knowledge to be competent as a manager in any tourism functional area, along with the skills and knowledge to be competent in event management. The Diploma of Tourism qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a broad range of managerial skills in tourism operations, marketing and product development, underpinned by a range of operational competencies. The Diploma of Events qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a broad range of event management skills including significant communication, planning and organisational skills. This is underpinned by a detailed knowledge of the event management process.
Career Opportunities
Graduates with sufficient experience are able to work as a manager in a range of fields including: sales, marketing, product development, operations, retail travel, reservations, visitor information, events, conferences and festivals.

Course Length
This course is delivered full-time over 20 months incorporating theory and practical components as well as industry experience. Applicants that have completed previous tourism qualifications such as the Certificate IV in Tourism will receive full credit for completed units providing considerable advanced standing into this course.
Entry Requirements
Successful completion of year 12, VCE or equivalent, or are mature age and suitably experienced to successfully complete the course.
Pathways
This course provides a pathway to a Degree in Tourism Management.
Eligibilty and Exemptions to Receive a Government Subsidised Place
To receive a government subsidised place, students who enrol in Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses are subject to meeting eligibility criteria such as age and prior educational history. If applicants do not meet the eligibility criteria then they may still apply for the course, but they will not be entitled to a government subsidised place and will be charged a commercial fee. There will be some exceptional circumstances where applicants will be exempt from meeting the eligibility criteria. Please contact the Customer Service Centre on (03) 5564 8911 for more information with regards to eligibility.
Course Costs
Please refer to the student handbook available at the Customer Service Centre of each campus or via the website. A number of off campus excursions will be held during the course. An excursion fee will be charged to cover the cost of these industry visits. Material fees are payable for printed materials which will be provided by the Institute during your course of study. The materials chosen have been selected to assist with your tourism education and training. Students will be required to purchase their own stationery, usb’s, calculators and other sundry items.

Credits/Exemptions
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the individual’s non-accredited training and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning or competency outcomes. RPL is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Current Competence (RCC). You can undertake a recognition assessment for individual units in most courses offered through South West TAFE. The process requires you to be able to provide evidence of competence.
