Course Description
This course is more commonly known as a Pre Sea Course.
This course is recognised by the maritime industry as providing the skills and knowledge required of people to work as deckhands onboard commercial vessels in Australian waters. This course would suit any person wishing to enter the Australian Maritime industry in fishing, commercial or on a recreational basis.

Course Length
This course is delivered full-time over one week. Participants must also complete a First Aid course.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.

Pathways
After completion of the Certificate I course (Deckhand) the pathway could lead to completion of Certificate II (Coxswains) and then onto Certificate III (Master 5 Skipper). All units completed in this course will be credited to further study, as they are mandatory for all maritime qualifications.
There is also a possible career pathway in Marine Engine Driving, MED 3, and MED 2.

Credits/Exemptions
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the individual’s non-accredited training and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning or competency outcomes. RPL is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Current Competence (RCC).
You can undertake a recognition assessment for individual units in most courses offered through South West TAFE. The process requires you to be able to provide evidence of competence.
