Diploma of Agriculture students blitz the steer handling competition at this year Royal Melbourne Agricultural Show
Last week 10 students from Glenormiston took nine steers they had prepared and trained to the Royal Melbourne Show to compete in the Steer Led and Carcase Competition. The competition run over September 17, 18 and 19 and attracted over 50 school, TAFE and private teams and 150 steers were involved. The agricultural students have been training and preparing the steers since May training them to lead on a halter and react to commands. Students were also expected to prepare the steers to meat industry specifications for each relevant cattle class. The three days are very demanding on all involved including the team support staff, Rob Graham and Laurie Hickey.All students involved can be commended for their efforts and patience getting there and preparing the steers, an overall terrific team achievement they can all be proud of and will look back on in years to come. Some out standing performances included:
- Sharon Briggs - 1st place in 18 year old Led Steer championship
- Emma Hines - 2nd place in 19 year old Led Steer championship
- Ben Stephens - 2nd place in 20 year old Led Steer championship
- Ben Stephens steer `Billy’ - third place in 500 kg plus Heavy Weight Domestic Market steer
All steers apart from one met class characteristics and three steers were nominated for the Borwicks Steer Trophy.
