Centre for Trade and Technology Skills

The Centre for Technology Skills is home to a dynamic choice of study areas that provide pathways to some of Australia’s most high-profile industries. Study areas include: Engineering, Electrical, Automotive and Transport, Maritime, and IT.

Engineering
The Engineering study area provides apprenticeship, traineeship and post-apprenticeship training in mechanical and fabrication engineering. Students train in our purpose-built facilities, which feature a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Technology Centre and the latest lathes and milling machines – the ideal environment for gaining hands-on experience in practical-based studies.

Electrical
Backed by skilled training personnel who are experts in their field, the Electrical study area offers apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship qualifications. A range of compliance-related short courses are also offered throughout year. Students gain real-life experience in our fully equipped electronics laboratory - a must in this highly regulated and safety-driven industry.

Automotive and Transport
The Automotive and Transport study area offers full qualifications and short courses across a range of disciplines such as motor mechanics, motor sport, alternative fuels, air-conditioning, bicycle mechanics and warehousing operations. Short courses are tailored every year to match emerging trends such as the burgeoning natural gas vehicle industry. All training is delivered in our fully functioning automotive workshops equipped with the latest in technology.

Maritime
The Maritime study area utilises state of the art facilities and strong ties with businesses to provide practical-based training for students. Aside from gaining real-life experience aboard commercial sea vessels, students are trained with the latest equipment including a maritime simulator used for navigation, radar and boat handling and workshop equipped with live marine engines.
From recreational boat and pre-sea qualifications through to skipper’s accreditation, a range of full-time and short training programs are offered throughout the year.

Computing
From introductory courses to higher level IT qualifications, the Computing study area offers innovative training programs that maximise employment opportunities for graduates. Facilities include dedicated computer classrooms equipped with the latest computer software.

Building
Students train using the latest construction equipment, including:

  • scaffolding
  • elevated work platforms
  • laser levels
  • static machines
  • power tools
  • hand tools.

Plumbing
Students train using the latest technology and machinery, including:

  • solar, gas and electric heating systems
  • simulated mains and tank water systems
  • automatic bender
  • automatic guillotine
  • split system air conditioning units
  • multi-storey complex with simulated fit-out areas.

As well as providing pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship and TAFE in Schools training, the Centre offers compliance related short courses throughout the year.
