Youth Programs 2009
Youth Access Re-engagement Program (YARP)
This program has been designed to engage with young people (16 – 19) in their community who are currently not accessing education and training. YARP aims to provide an individualised program, which will allow young people to consider further education and training options.
Participants meet one to one with a trainer and work on improving linkages with community support agencies and training providers to help with the transition back into a small group education setting. Students enrol in accredited Certificate in General Education for Adults modules, which can transfer across to other courses. This program usually runs over 12 weeks with the student moving into either the Certificate in General Education or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning.
Certificate in General Education for Adults (CGEA)
This course is designed for people who want to improve their reading, writing, mathematics and communications skills for further study or work. Classes are small and friendly. Elective subjects are offered each year, depending on student interest and staff expertise.
The course is continued all year, but participants may enrol at the start of each term (except term four).
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and
willing to participate in an adult learning
environment. All interested applicants
need to attend a selection interview with a
teacher from the General and Further Education
Department to determine suitability for the
course.
This course is recognised throughout Victoria. Should you wish to go on to further study at TAFE, this course may allow participants to gain credits in some TAFE courses. Units from the Certificate in General Education for Adults go towards the Victorian Certificate in Applied Learning – an approved senior school certificate for Years 10 – 12.
Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning is a hands-on option for students wanting to complete an alternate senior school certificate. The VCAL gives students practical work related experience, as well as literacy and numeracy skills and the opportunity to build personal skills that are important for life and work. The VCAL has three levels – Foundation, Intermediate and Senior. Students start at a level that matches their needs and abilities. Each level would normally take a year’s full time program to complete. The course can be completed on a part time basis.
VCAL Foundation – is a year 10 level of study
VCAL Intermediate – is a year 11 level of study
VCAL Senior – is a year 12 level of study
Students who complete their VCAL can move onto further study or employment, including apprenticeships and traineeships.
