What's new
South West TAFE Portland Campus recently celebrated 21 years in style with a party for past and present staff and students. The evening was attended by local business, industry, community members and staff from Skills Victoria. Staff and students who attended the celebration enjoyed catching up and reminiscing about ‘the good old days’ when Portland TAFE was a collection of portable buildings and a shed.
The Hurd St site was redeveloped in 2000. The new building which replaced the portables includes specialist computer labs, video conference facilities, library, general purpose classrooms, staff and student amenities and administration.
SOUTH WEST INSTITUTE OF TAFE PORTLAND CAMPUS SECURES $5.2 million
| South West TAFE Portland Campus has successfully secured $5.2 million in Commonwealth funding to build Stage 2 of the Hurd St Campus. Amanda Hennessy, Head of Campus said ‘the Portland Campus management and staff are very pleased to have secured funds for a major building project in our region which will provide employment for approximately 30 people during the construction and commissioning stages’. The funding will be used to establish a new 800m2 Industry Training Centre incorporating a state of the art automotive and marine engine driver workshop and a specialist hydraulics and pneumatics centre. In addition a 150m2 extension to the existing main building will establish flexible training facilities for hair, beauty and service skills industries. Graduates will gain the skills and knowledge to secure jobs in bookkeeping, accounting, office management and children’s services positions which are currently in demand state wide. Due to open in July 2010, the new facilities at South West TAFE’s Portland campus will bring specialised equipment and additional capacity to Portland enabling people to move from existing industry sectors into the new jobs associated with emerging industries in our region. Associated service industries which will play an important role in supporting new growth will also benefit from new training places. South West TAFE CEO, Joe Piper said ‘this allocation of $5.2 mil shows a commitment by the Commonwealth Government to meet the growing training requirements of existing and emerging industries in the green triangle region” |
